MCP is the interface through which AI agents operate your software on their own, with your permissions and your audit log.
The standard is here: Claude, ChatGPT, and Copilot all speak it.
The problem is not the technology but that almost no German provider offers it: 4 out of 21 in the report.
A customer writes to you: "I just asked Claude to summarize the open items for customer Meier. Why doesn't that work with your software?"
The honest answer today: because your software was not built for it. The technical answer is called MCP, and the good news is that it is not rocket science but a standard with clear rules.
The one-sentence explanation
MCP (Model Context Protocol) is the interface through which an AI agent can operate your software, with your permissions, your rules, and your audit log.
A picture: before MCP, an AI model could read and write text. With MCP, it gets hands, clearly defined tools ("Tools"): create invoice, search contact, complete project. Every tool has a description, parameters, and a return value, just like a good API, but for a user who never reads the manual: the language model.
What an agent actually does with it
- Your customer types into Claude/ChatGPT/Copilot: "Create Anna Sample from Sample GmbH as a contact and draft a quote."
- The agent reads the available tools and picks the right one (which is why good tool descriptions are worth their weight in gold).
- The agent calls the tool via MCP, with your customer's token, on their behalf, with their permissions.
- Your software does what it always does, just now operated by an agent.
The decisive difference from a screen-scraping bot: the agent works through your official interface, with a real login, real permissions, and an audit log that you control.
Why this will now reach everyone
- The major AI platforms (Claude, ChatGPT, Copilot, and others) speak MCP: the standard established itself in 2025/2026 as the de facto interface for agents.
- The specification is being actively developed further (most recently in July 2026, one reason why operations need a maintenance partner).
- German B2B SaaS is lagging behind: in our German MCP Report 2026, we audited 21 German B2B SaaS APIs. Exactly 4 offer their own MCP server (awork, seven.io, clockodo, and personio). 14 of 21 do not even provide a machine-readable API description.
What "MCP-capable" means technically
| Component | What it means | What goes wrong without it |
|---|---|---|
| MCP server in front of your API | A service that exposes your API functions as tools | Customers build unofficial GitHub wrappers, outside your control |
| OAuth sign-in | The agent acts on behalf of the signed-in user | Static API keys: no "this agent may only read" |
| Permissions per tool | Read/write separable, tenants strictly separated | One mistake by the agent becomes a data incident |
| Safe write actions | Idempotency, confirmation required for destructive steps | "Delete the test contact" deletes the real one |
| Good tool descriptions | The language model picks the right tool | Wrong tools, wrong parameters, frustration |
| Logging | Every agent action traceable | No chance when reconstructing an incident |
The realistic next step
Not everyone needs an MCP server right away. But every B2B SaaS operator should know where they stand. That is what our free MCP live test is for: one minute, no sign-up, a score from 0–100 plus a list of deficiencies.
